Theatre is one of the loves of my life. I've been attending performances since before I started school, and participating in it in various ways since jr. high. Combining that with my love of art and graphic design, I've been fortunate to create a body of work promoting many live performances for multiple organizations over the years.
The majority of this work would have had postcards, program covers, and T-shirt designs in addition to the posters. Usually this involved some modifications to the art for sizing as well as for content. (The program covers don't have the box office phone number on them typically unless it is very integrated into the design.) Some designs have had web elements, like Facebook headers done for them, and others have been modified for outdoor boards. T-shirts are where the designs would see the biggest modifications, most of the time these are (silk screen) printed in three colors or less, but using a shirt color for the ground also helps keep them truer to the original designs.
I try to incorporate elements from the show itself or themes from the specific production design so that things all tie together. I prefer to read the script and be familiar with the show before starting the design, and it's helpful to know what the set and costume designers are planning for the look of the show in case there are elements there that can be incorporated into the posters and other print designs.
